Macro, I love you.

I enjoy sewing. It appeals to my artistic, creative side. I like making something new and having a project. I decided a few years ago, after seeing a neat book on pictoral quilts, that I wanted to make a quilt. A couple months ago I got out some scrap fabric and started sewing it together, just to see what would happen. It went okay. I made a lot of mistakes but had fun and learned a lot. I even made my own bias tape and after messing it up three times, and watching a tutorial on YouTube, figured out how to attach it. It looks pretty bad, the mini quilt, but it was fun. Despite the help of YouTube, I have been unable to grasp the idea of the mitered corner. A friend of mine is coming over to help tomorrow-she is an amazing seamstress, really amazing. So I thought I ought to have something to miter. I started another mini-quilt today and about halfway into it my machine has gone on strike. I have no idea what is wrong. I have taken apart the bobbin and put it back together, I have unthreaded and rethreaded, I have done as I have learned with my computer, turned it off and back on again, but alas, it still just sits there, kaput. The fabric won't move. Everything sounds and feels like it's working properly, but the fabric is not propelled forward. I think it's the "feed dog," but haven't a clue how to fix it. So, I'm packing it in today. Here is the mini-quilt I did the other day, and the start of today, and the state of my dining room/sewing room/den/kitchen. :)

Can you believe it? I did that.

Note the screw drivers in an attempt to take off the top plate thing-whatever it's called. I couldn't get it off...probably a good thing. Oh-and the triangles? What was I thinking? Did you know when you sew triangles together there is no longer a point at the end? I'm sure there's a proper way to do triangles...I just cut off the points.


*****I DID IT! No, I take that back, Tony fixed it. It was just a setting. So, I finished the mini-quilt top after dinner.*****

Happy Birthday to this guy!

We're so lucky to have this man in our family. He is a wonderful father, father-in-law and grandfather. Two of my favorite things about Lucy's Grandpa are: 1.) The way he rushes out of the house as soon as we pull in for a visit, to be the first to get to see Lucy. 2.) Our breakfast counter chats. Dad makes a delicious breakfast (and lunch, and dinner) when we go to UC and I often find myself sitting at the counter chatting. I've learned a lot from him about people and relationships over the last 6 years. His joyful countenance and gentle demeanor are such comforts. We love you, Dad. Happy Birthday.

I'm headed off to Girl's Camp in a couple days. It's been on my brain non-stop. Are the girls going to have fun? Are they going to like me? Am I going to get a schedule when I get there? Are the girls going to like the skit? Oh the skit, the skit. It is what it is and it will be great. WHY OH WHY AM I STRESSED ABOUT GIRL'S CAMP? This is supposed to be fun right? Maybe it's to avoid my looming anxiety and sadness over missing Lu. I printed out some pictures of her and Tony to staple by my bunk. I'm going to miss them so so much.

I'm falling in love again....

I have gotten free magazine subscriptions (islands, horse illustrated, popular science, O, muscle fitness-and more I can't think of), toilet paper, paper towel, tee shirts, books, coloring books, band aids, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, makeup, deodorant, hot dogs (coupon for free package), lipstick, stickers, calendar, water bottle, skin creams, feminine hygiene products...and that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

And that's just the stuff that applies to me---there's a lot of stuff that doesn't interest me.
I look forward to checking the mail to see what new prize is there.

**since posting this, I got the mail...today I received free Tampax Pearl Tampons, and Freeze and Steam food saver bags.

You should have seen Jen and I out in the garden today. You'd have thought we'd never seen vegetables before. I felt like Tom Hanks in Castaway...I HAVE MADE VEGETABLES!
